A trauma-informed, biblically grounded training and certification program equipping churches to recognize, respond to, and prevent spiritual, emotional, and relational abuse.
The Safe Church Project was born out of both heartbreak and hope. As a survivor, an advocate, and a ministry leader, Adrienne Binder has seen the devastating consequences when the Church is unprepared to respond to abuse, and the beautiful healing that begins when we get it right.
Here is why this work matters.
Emotional, spiritual, and relational abuse often hides behind Scripture, charisma, or institutional power. Many leave the church not because they’ve walked away from God, but because the church unknowingly walked away from them.
Many families and churches have unknowingly accepted emotionally unhealthy dynamics as normal. The Church must be equipped to name what is broken and stop spiritualizing dysfunction.
Most pastors and ministry teams care deeply, but they’re not trauma-informed. Without training, even well-intentioned responses can retraumatize.
Jesus protected the vulnerable and disrupted spiritual abuse. When churches become places of refuge and repair, they embody the Gospel in its fullest form.
"Safety is not optional when love is the mission."
Sanctuary Certified™ is a self-paced pathway: an 8-module video course delivered across four phases, designed to help churches create lasting cultural change. Flexible, structured, and built for the whole church.
Core training built around biblical principles, trauma-informed theology, and real-world case studies. Designed for churches of all sizes and denominations.
Official recognition for churches and individuals who complete the training and commit to a culture of safety, accountability, and compassion.
A trauma-informed baseline assessment that shows where your church stands today, plus a re-assessment at the end that measures real culture change toward safety.
Downloadable checklists, conversation guides, and sample church policies designed to build healthy boundaries from the inside out.
A public listing for churches that complete Sanctuary Certified™, helping survivors and families find communities trained and equipped to respond with wisdom and grace.
Practical steps to help your entire ministry implement trauma-informed practices across all departments, not just counseling or care.
Most church safety training is built around background checks and volunteer screening.
That work matters, and your church should be doing it. But it is designed to keep harm out. It offers almost nothing for the harder situation: when the harm came from inside, from a leader, from spiritual authority, or from the culture itself.
Sanctuary Certified™ is built for that. It teaches your leadership to recognize it, respond to it without retraumatizing, and repair afterward, with the policies and structures to make the response consistent rather than dependent on whoever happens to be in the room.
The forms of harm that hide behind Scripture, charisma, and leadership authority, addressed as their own subject rather than a footnote to physical safety.
Anchored in current Texas requirements, including the 24-hour reporting window and the absence of a general clergy exemption, with guidance for localizing to your state.
Reporting policy, response policy, institutional response flowchart, and leadership conversation scripts, so your team is not improvising in the worst week of someone’s life.
A baseline culture assessment at the start and a re-assessment at the end, so your church can see whether anything actually changed.
Developed by Adrienne Binder, EdD candidate in Christian Leadership at Liberty University, drawing on established trauma research and theological scholarship rather than trend-driven content.
Sanctuary Certified™ is designed for the churches and leaders who already care, who just need the tools to act on that care with wisdom and courage.
Sanctuary Certified™ is a whole-church license. One enrollment covers your staff, volunteers, and leaders through all four phases (an 8-module video course), your certification, and your free listing in the National Safe Church Directory. Pricing is tiered by church size so it stays within reach, and no church is ever turned away over cost.
Small Church · Under 100
All four phases (8 modules), your certification and Safe Church badge, and a free National Safe Church Directory listing.
Medium Church · 100 to 500
All four phases (8 modules), your certification and Safe Church badge, and a free National Safe Church Directory listing.
Large Church · 500+
All four phases (8 modules), your certification and Safe Church badge, and a free National Safe Church Directory listing.
Certification is renewed annually. A small recertification fee keeps your standards current with changing law, accounts for staff and volunteer turnover, and keeps your Directory listing active. The listing is always free with active certification; we are never pay-to-play.
Is cost a barrier? We hold a limited number of scholarship seats each year for under-resourced congregations, funded through Restoration Resources. Ask us about a scholarship and we will meet you where you are. No church is turned away over cost.
"This project is my offering: for the sake of the wounded, for the sake of the Church, and for the sake of the Gospel."

For years, Adrienne wrestled with the disconnect between the love of Jesus and the harm done in His name. She saw how emotional and spiritual abuse, especially the kind hidden behind religious language or leadership titles, left deep, lasting wounds. She also saw churches that meant well but didn’t know how to respond.
Adrienne is a doctoral candidate in Christian Leadership at Liberty University, where her academic work focuses on trauma-informed leadership. She founded the Safe Church Project out of that same conviction, and built Sanctuary Certified™ as a distinct curriculum written specifically for churches and ministry contexts.
She believes the Church can do better. She believes Jesus is still healing, still restoring, and still calling His Body to love with both truth and tenderness.
