How To Speak Without Fear: My Conversation on The Trauma Therapist Podcast
For a lot of my life, speaking honestly felt like the least safe thing I could do.
So when Guy Macpherson invited me ontoThe Trauma Therapist podcast for a conversation titled "How To Speak Without Fear," I recognized the beautiful irony immediately. This is the exact fear I've spent years studying, healing from, and helping others move through.
Here's some of what we explored.
Where the fear actually comes from. Fear of speaking is rarely about the words themselves. More often it traces back to a moment — or a season — when using our voice wasn't safe. When honesty was met with conflict, dismissal, or withdrawal, the nervous system learned its lesson and filed "speaking up" under danger. The silence that followed was never weakness. It was protection doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Why confidence tips don't fix it.You can't power-pose your way out of a fear that lives in the body. If the root is a lack of safety, the solution has to be safety too. Finding your voice again is less about performance and more about healing — about building relationships and environments where being honest no longer threatens your sense of belonging.
What courage actually looks like. The goal was never to speak with no fear at all. It's to speak without being ruled by it — to let the fear come along without letting it drive. That's true for a survivor saying a hard sentence out loud for the first time, for a leader naming what's really happening on their team, and honestly, it was true for me before we hit record.
This conversation sits right at the center of the work I do through Restoration Resources: creating spaces — in individuals, families, and whole communities — where people feel safe enough to finally tell the truth.
If any of this resonates, I'd love for you to listen to the full episode above, and to explore where your own next step toward restoration might begin.
